5 stories from Tuesday night in the NHL

Canadian teams were involved in half of the 10 games on the National Hockey League schedule on Tuesday night and, with one or two exceptions, enjoyed the evening. The Leafs, Jets and Canadiens (in overtime) posted victories, while the Flames let one get away (also in overtime) and the Canucks suffered an off night by Ryan Miller while losing in Dallas.

Leafs eclipse a star

You might say that the Toronto Maple Leafs had been star-struck early this season. In three losses to Pittsburgh and Detroit they had allowed a three-point performance by Sidney Crosby and five points by Henrik Zetterberg, who was in on every goal in the home-and-home series, including the only score in a 1-0 Red Wings overtime win.

Tuesday, the Leafs travelled to Long Island to face NHL scoring co-leader John Tavares and the Islanders, but this time they managed to limit the damage to one goal in a 5-2 triumph.

Tavares scored on a power play to give New York a 2-1 lead but the Leafs responded with four goals on 10 shots in the second period to chase Jaro Halak from the Islanders' net. Phil Kessel had two of the goals, his third and fourth on the season. All four, plus an earlier goal by James van Riemsdyk, went past Halak on his stick side.

Roman Polak and David Clarkson had the other Toronto goals.

Canadiens' late magic grounds Wings

Pavel Datsyuk had an assist on a Henrik Zetterberg goal in his season debut, but the Montreal Canadiens finally broke through against Detroit's Jimmy Howard with a late-period goal and came away with a 2-1 victory after less than a minute of overtime.

Alex Galchenyuk put one past Howard at 16:50 of the third period, while David Desharnais poked home a rebound after just 56 seconds of overtime after Howard had thwarted Max Pacioretty and P.K. Subban.

Carey Price saved 27 of 28 shots for the win.

Montreal's sixth win in seven games marks their best start since the 1977-78 season when they had the same record after seven games. That was in the midst of a run of Stanley Cup-winning dominance.

Jets find takeoff space

The desperate Winnipeg Jets finally found a team they could beat when they handled the visiting Carolina Hurricanes, the NHL's only winless team.

After losing four straight, the Jets put together a good effort for the 3-1 triumph, built on two first-period goals within 40 seconds of each other and the goaltending of Ondrej Pavelec, who picked up his second win of the season, turning aside 21 of 22 shots.

Adam Lowry, with his first NHL goal, Andrew Ladd and a flying Dustin Byfuglien scored for the Jets.

The Jets ran their record to 2-4-0, while Carolina fell to 0-3-2 on the season.

Texas homecoming a downer for Desjardins

Vancouver coach Willie Desjardins may have been looking forward to returning to Texas but his homecoming turned into a nightmare (or maybe a chainsaw massacre).

Desjardins coached the last two seasons with the Texas Stars in the American Hockey League and previously worked as an assistant coach for the Dallas Stars from 2010-12. Tuesday night, Dallas made the Canucks see stars, 6-3, as Kari Lehtonen made 43 saves while Canucks netminder Ryan Miller was pulled early in the second period after allowing five goals on 12 shots.

Eric Cole, with his first two-goal game since last New Year's Eve, paced the Stars' attack. Three players, including Tyler Seguin had a goal and an assist for Dallas.

Early in the second period Jamie Benn and Cody Eakin scored 29 seconds apart to oust Miller.

After the Stars built a 5-0 lead the Canucks managed to get three shots past Lehtonen as Radim Vrbata, Zack Kassian and Jannik Hansen tallied for Vancouver.

Northern lights and flying sparks

When Lightning mixes with Flames, sparks were sure to fly at Calgary's Saddledome.

However, for 41 minutes nary a goal was scored.

Flames' rookie Johnny Gaudreau changed that with a brilliant, weaving rush before dishing off to Dennis Wideman for the opening goal. Gaudreau, who scored his first NHL goal Sunday, crashed heavily into the boards and limped off. He did, however, eventually come back to play.

Tampa Bay spoiled the Flames' evening when Valtteri Flippula evened the contest at 17:44 of the third and Ondrej Palat really ruined things when he scored on a backhander past Karri Ramo three minutes into overtime.

The 2-1 loss evened the Flames record at 4-4.
