Toronto Argonauts fans, looking for something to cheer, waited for most of Monday's 13-12 Labour Day Classic loss at Hamilton for Ricky Ray to put himself in the Canadian Football League record book.

With a 37-yard completion to Jason Barnes with a little more than eight minutes left in the fourth quarter at Tim Hortons Field, Ray became the youngest CFL quarterback to reach the 50,000-yard career passing mark at 34 years, 10 months and 10 days.

Anthony Calvillo, who retired after last season, reached 50,000 yards at the age of 34 years, 10 months and 22 days.

Calvillo is pro football's career passing leader with 79,816 yards. Other CFL pivots to top 50,000 yards include Damon Allen (72,381), Danny McManus (53,255), current Ottawa Redblacks quarterback Henry Burris and the late Ron Lancaster.

Ray played against the first four signal-callers while Lancaster coached against him early in Ray's career.

On Monday, Ray completed 16 of 29 passes for 142 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
