NFL Roundup: Robert Griffin III suffers dislocated ankle

After a tough week off the field, the NFL got back to playing — and the focus turned to big-name players who were injured all over the league.

Robert Griffin III, Jamaal Charles, DeSean Jackson, A.J. Green and Knowshon Moreno all left their games on a busy Sunday for team trainers and medical staffs.

Griffin dislocated his left ankle in the first quarter of Washington's 41-10 victory over Jacksonville, putting his season in jeopardy. The Redskins quarterback was scheduled for X-rays and an MRI to determine more about the injury. He and head coach Jay Gruden did not offer a timetable for a return, but the injury typically sidelines NFL players for at least two months.

"Moments like this," Griffin said, "you just have to keep the faith."

If there is also a fracture, Griffin will need surgery and will almost certainly be done for the year. He was hurt when he landed awkwardly on his ankle as he finished the throw and then tumbled out of bounds. The pass was caught by Jackson for an 11-yard gain.

"It's an excruciating pain," Griffin said. "Anytime you look at your ankle and it's going in a strange direction, you don't want to get up."

Jay Cutler passed for three fourth-quarter TDs after much of Chicago's starting defence went down and the Bears beat the San Francisco 49ers, 28-20 to spoil their Levi's Stadium debut on Sunday night. Cutler threw three TD passes to Brandon Marshall, two in the wild fourth quarter, as Chicago erased a 13-point deficit and quieted the sellout crowd.

The San Diego Chargers relied on the familiar combo of Philip Rivers to Antonio Gates to upset the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks, 30-21 on Sunday. Gates had three TD catches, including a spectacular, one-handed grab, and the Chargers controlled the tempo to keep Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch off the field.

Terrance Knighton batted away Alex Smith's fourth-and-goal pass to Dwayne Bowe with 15 seconds left, preserving the Denver Broncos' 24-17 win over the scrappy Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. The Broncos thought they had sealed the win twice earlier on the drive. But Aqib Talib's interception return for a TD was negated by Quanterus Smith's hold and Nate Irving's fumble recovery was overruled on replay. Peyton Manning was 21 of 26 for 242 yards and three TDs.

Aaron Rodgers threw for three TDs, Jordy Nelson had a career-high 209 yards receiving and the Green Bay Packers rallied from an 18-point deficit for a 31-24 win over the New York Jets on Sunday. Randall Cobb caught two short scoring strikes and a two-point conversation that gave the Packers a 24-21 lead in the third quarter.

J.J. Watt found a new way to impact a game. Watt caught a one-yard TD pass, Arian Foster ran for 138 yards and a major score as the Houston Texans won their second straight game to open the season, beating the Oakland Raiders, 30-14 on Sunday.

Greg Zuerlein's fourth field goal of the day, a 38-yarder with 38 seconds remaining, gave third-string quarterback Austin Davis and the St. Louis Rams a 19-17 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Zuerlein also delivered field goals of 36, 35 and 46 yards. Davis completed 22 of 29 passes for 235 yards with no interceptions in his first NFL start.

Brian Hoyer took the Cleveland Browns down the field and to something they haven't had in 10 years — a win in the home opener. Hoyer directed an 85-yard drive to set up Billy Cundiff's 29-yard field goal with three seconds left, giving Cleveland a 26-24 win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

Cincinnati Bengals running back Giovani Bernard picked up the depleted offence by running for 90 yards and turning short passes into big plays in a 24-10 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. The Bengals won their home opener and improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2006, despite losing several key players to injury, most notably A.J. Green.

Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers are back atop the NFC South. Newton made a successful return from a rib injury that sidelined him the first week, completing 22 of 34 passes for 281 yards and a TD in a 24-7 victory over the Detroit Lions on Sunday. Carolina started 2-0 for the first time since 2008.

C.J. Spiller returned a kickoff 102 yards for a TD in the Buffalo Bills' 29-10 win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. The Dolphins also lost a key off-season addition when running back Knowshon Moreno did not return after hurting his left elbow 11 minutes in. Dan Carpenter hit five field goals and the Bills had four sacks in helping Buffalo get off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2011 and only the sixth time since 2000.

The Dallas Cowboys avoided an 0-2 start as DeMarco Murray ran for 167 yards and a TD and Dan Bailey kicked four field goals in a 26-10 victory over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. The Cowboys haven't started 0-2 since 2010, when Wade Phillips was fired midway through the season and Jason Garrett was promoted to head coach.

Tom Brady and the New England Patriots took advantage of Adrian Peterson's absence and Matt Cassel's four interceptions and Chandler Jones returned a field goal he blocked for a TD in a 30-7 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. Brady went 15 for 22 for 142 yards and a TD, while Cassel's first start against his former mentor was a dud.

Ted Ginn Jr. ran 71 yards on a punt return for a go-ahead fourth-quarter TD and the Arizona Cardinals beat the error-prone New York Giants, 25-14 on Sunday. Arizona was without injured starting quarterback Carson Palmer. Playing in a regular-season game for the first time since 2010, Drew Stanton led the Cardinals on three long scoring drives and their ninth win in 11 games.
