It happened to Genie. It almost happened to Milos.
One day after Eugenie Bouchard was shocked by American qualifier Shelby Rogers — the 113th-ranked player in the world — the same fate nearly happened to fellow Canadian Milos Raonic.
But after a nervous first set, Raonic responded by beating American Jack Sock 4-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4) Wednesday night at the Rogers Cup in Toronto.
Tournament organizers can exhale — at least for another day.
Still, this hasn't been a sparkling event for Canadians at this tournament, which saw Wimbledon finalist Bouchard and Wimbledon doubles Vasek Pospisil — with Sock, coincidentally enough — headline a list of Canucks ousted from their national event.
All that's left is Raonic.
The task won't be easy. With No. 1 Novak Djokovic and 17-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer in the tournament, Raonic will have his hands full.
The 23-year-old Thornhill, Ont., star survived Sock, but can he keep it going?
What must Milos do to salvage the Rogers Cup for Canadians?
