Commonwealth Games come to a close in Glasgow

The curtain fell on the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Sunday with the closing ceremony in Hampden Park.

Australian pop star Kylie Minogue headlined the ceremony, which also had performances from Scottish artists Lulu, Deacon Blue, Dougie MacLean and others.

Hammer throw gold medallist Sultana Frizell carried Canada's flag into the stadium. Frizell defended her Delhi 2010 title in dominant fashion, setting then breaking her own Commonwealth record three times during the event.

"It's definitely a nice cherry on top," she said. 

Canada finished third in the overall medal standings in Glasgow 2014, winning 32 gold medals and 82 total, bettering its 2010 marks (fourth overall, 26 gold, 75 medals total).

"What we were really pleased with is that we closed the gap a little bit [on England and Australia]," team general manager Scott Stevenson said.

"Not just us, some of the other nations as well. We all took a little bite out of those two big guns, and we're pretty proud of that. Not just in total medals but also in gold medals."

England ended Australia's run of six straight finishes atop the Commonwealth medal standings. England ended competition with 58 golds and 174 medals, while Australia won 49 gold and 137 medals total.

Frizell's hammer throw win was just one of many standout Canadian athletic performances in Glasgow.

Rhythmic gymnast Patricia Bezzoubenko won the most gold medals of anyone at the Games, taking five of a possible six in her discipline. Swimmer Ryan Cochrane repeated as the men's 400-metre and 1,500-metre freestyle champion. Michelle Li won Canada's first-ever badminton gold in women's singles at the Games. Diver Meaghan Benfeito and gymnast Scott Morgan both won two titles as well.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games will be held in Gold Coast, Australia, and Edmonton has a strong chance of landing the 2022 event.
