Brazil's World Cup ends with a thud

If FIFA doesn't remove the third-place match from the World Cup after Saturday's horror show, it never will.

Brazil was tortured more on Saturday, as the football-mad nation had to watch its listless team take another insult, falling 3-0 to the Netherlands.

Robin van Persie gave the Dutch a lead after just three minutes on a spot kick. Daley Blind made it 2-0 for the Dutch only 16 minutes into the match. The humiliation was complete when Georginio Wijnaldum scored to make it 3-0 in second-half injury time.

Neither team was excited at the prospect of trotting out for an essentially meaningless game.

And forcing the Brazilians to suffer the ridicule of the fans again, after that historic German thrashing, could be considered a form of cruelty in some countries.

The fans at Estádio Nacional booed the home side mercilessly at times during the match, especially during the final few minutes.

Key play

You only needed to watch the first three minutes to see how the day was going to go for Brazil. Thiago Silva fouled Arjen Robben on a break, Van Persie scored from the spot, and Neymar wished he was back home playing poker.

Man of the match

Arjen Robben. Easily the Netherlands' best player at the World Cup, Robben ended his tournament on a bright note.

Fast fact

How about three:

  • Brazil conceded the most goals at a World Cup in its history in 2014 (14), and the most at this year's tournament.
  • Brazil lost two straight matches on home soil for the first time in 74 years.
  • Oscar received the very first yellow card for diving at the 2014 World Cup, and he didn't even dive – he was tripped by Blind.

It was a good day for…

Wondering why this match is played. We've been thinking about it a lot during the lead-up to this game. This display didn't do it any favours. Third place at the World Cup means nothing to the teams who want to win it.

It was a bad day for…

Looking at your $72 million investment. David Luiz seems to have lost all conceptual reasoning behind the act of defensive football. Paris Saint-Germain is probably wondering how it can get its money back from Chelsea.

What this means

The Netherlands

Scant consolation after a tournament that saw the Dutch come close yet again, to just fall short. Still the best nation to have not won a World Cup in the modern era. The influx of youngsters will help the side stay competitive, which is a good thing because their major stars are getting up in age.

Brazil

We said at the start of the tournament that it'll either be a party or a funeral for Brazil after the World Cup was over. But nobody expected the disaster we saw in their last two matches. Now with a companion piece to the heartbreaking final of 1950, Brazil needs to do a lot of soul-searching to re-capture the spirit of "O Jogo Bonito" once more.

To add ultimate insult to injury, the Brazilians must watch their hated rival Argentina play Germany, the side who humiliated them, in the final on Sunday (CBC TV, cbc.ca/fifaworldcup, 3 p.m. ET).
