FIFA World Cup: France 5, Switzerland 2

France absolutely overwhelmed Switzerland in a 5-2 drubbing in a match between the Group E leaders at the 2014 FIFA World Cup on Friday.

Les Bleus stunned the Swiss with two goals in two minutes to open up the match, which featured five different French scorers. Olivier Giroud started the onslaught in the 17th minute, and France pounced on a very poor Swiss restart to score again a minute later, with Blaise Matuidi finishing the move.

Mathieu Valbuena added to Swiss misery in the 40th on a quick counter. Karim Benzema was stopped on a penalty by Swiss keeper Diego Benaglio, but ended up scoring in the second half, along with Moussa Sissoko.

Blerim Dzemaili and Granit Xhaka gave the Swiss consolation goals in the final 10 minutes of the match.

Key play

It was over after Valbuena scored on the break, after a poor Swiss corner allowed the French to counter for its third goal of the game.

Man of the match

Olivier Giroud. Began France's onslaught by opening the scoring, and helped finish the Swiss off with the assist on Valbuena's marker to make it 3-0.

It was a good day for...

Swiss cheese references. There will be plenty after that poor display from the Switzerland defence. And the term "defence" is used here as loosely as possible.

It was a bad day for...

Defence. Period. France forgot to play defence for the last 10 minutes, and Switzerland missed that part of the pre-game powerpoint presentation. Amazingly, it could've been 7-2 if not for a stopped penalty and a disallowed goal at the end of the match.

Fast fact

France scored five goals in a World Cup match for the first time since 1958, when it lit up West Germany 6-3 in the third-place game.

What this means

France. All but assured a spot in the Round of 16, France only needs a point against Ecuador on Wednesday (CBC TV, cbc.ca/fifaworldcup, 4 p.m. ET) to advance outright — and that's only if Ecuador beats Honduras in its match later Friday. A draw or Honduras win will automatically qualify France.

Switzerland. Not out of it by any means, the Swiss showed some character with two late goals, finishing the match strong. And the good news is that Switzerland has Honduras for its final opponent (CBC TV, cbc.ca/fifaworldcup, 4 p.m. ET), where a win will likely be enough to see the Swiss through to the knockout stages.

They said it

"That was a very good match, we did a lot of things right. Five goals against a strong Swiss team, we've got six points, that's ideal. We've got a group with strong opponents. We've prepared well but have to get through the match with Ecuador and then we'll start from scratch again in the next round." — France coach Didier Deschamps

"France has excellent individual players and they can go very far in this tournament. When the opponent has such strong individual players, they can move quickly to counterattack. We have seen France's potential. They had an explosion of power and this shows the class of this team." — Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld
