The Toronto Blue Jays only got a half of an inning's work from Jose Reyes on Monday, as the shortstop was pulled from the game following his first at-bat of the regular season.
The team later put the speedster on the 15-day disabled with left hamstring tightness.
Reyes, 30, was injured after running out a fly-out — robbed of a hit on a diving catch by Rays centre-fielder Desmond Jennings — and was replaced by second baseman Ryan Goins.
"I tried to run a little bit faster between home plate and first base, and I kind of feel my hammy there," Reyes said. "So I have to slow down and get out of the game because I don't want to get any worse."
He sat out several games during the final week of spring training with tightness in the same hamstring and wasn't 100 per cent for weekend exhibition games in Montreal against the New York Mets.
"Irritated the same spot, so that's a concern," Toronto manager John Gibbons said.
Reyes said the hamstring was "good enough" to play in Montreal and felt better Monday.
"When I tried for a little speed, something not right," Reyes said.
Last season, Reyes missed 66 games because of a severely sprained left ankle.
The Blue Jays have selected the contract of infielder Jonathan Diaz from triple-A Buffalo.
Diaz, 28, made his major league debut last June 29 against Toronto and appeared in five games for the Boston Red Sox.
The five-foot-nine, 155-pounder was drafted by Toronto in the 12th round of the 2006 amateur draft and has spent all but the 2013 campaign in the Blue Jays organization.
