Florida Panthers forward Jesse Winchester has been suspended, without pay, three games for elbowing Boston Bruins forward Chris Kelly during Thursday's game.
The National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced the decision Friday after Winchester's hearing.
The incident occurred at 4:52 of the first period and Winchester was not penalized on the play.
What do you think of Winchester's suspension?
NHL head disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan acknowledged in a video explanation that Kelly did not leave his head in a vulnerable position when it made contact with Winchester's elbow, noting that Winchester was in control of the play and responsible for the outcome.
"He sees Kelly clearly, elevates and extends his elbow directly into Kelly's head," Shanahan said. "While not all elbowing penalties necessarily rise to the level of supplemental discipline, on this play, the degree in which Winchester extends his elbow and the force to the contact of Kelly's head is significant."
Winchester, of Cornwall, Ont., will forfeit $9,230.76 of his salary. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
