Over the next couple of weeks, we'll be revisiting some great moments in Canadian Summer Olympic history on the days they happened. Today we're taking you back to July 31, 1932 in Los Angeles.
Born in Cornwall, Ont., and raised in Vancouver, high jumper Duncan McNaughton trained in Los Angeles, the site of the 1932 Olympics. As a student at the University of Southern California, McNaughton became good friends with American Bob Van Osdel.
The day of the event, four competitors, including McNaughton and Van Osdel, were tied after clearing a maximum height of 1.97 metres. Under the rules of the time, the order of placement would be decided by a jump-off.
The other two competitors were eliminated, pitting McNaugton and Van Osdel head-to-head for the gold. In a true show of sportsmanship, the American gave his friend some advice on how to improve his technique and McNaughton claimed the gold medal.
He remains the only Canadian ever to win an Olympic gold medal in the high jump.
