Normally, the annual Canada Day fireworks on July 1 coincide with those in the National Hockey League, namely the bidding for high-priced free agents.
But a lockout-shortened campaign that didn't begin until Jan. 19 bumped the start of the free-agent season to July 5.
There is no shortage of sought-after unrestricted free agents at the forward position, from surprise playoff performer Bryan Bickell to power forwards David Clarkson and Nathan Horton to veterans Mike Ribeiro and Jarome Iginla.
And there's added excitement in this year's crop because of the NHL's buyout guidelines that permit teams to buy out the contracts of two players before the start of the 2014-15 season.
Goalie Ilya Bryzgalov and forwards Daniel Briere and Vincent Lecavalier are impending UFAs after the Philadelphia Flyers and Tampa Bay Lightning, respectively, announced this week they would buy out the remaining years on the players' contracts.
In the case of Tampa Bay, it will be on the hook for the remaining two-thirds of Lecavalier's contract ($30 million US) over the next 14 years (twice the numbers of years left on his deal).
Bryzgalov, Briere and Lecavalier are featured in the photo gallery above, listing the notable UFAs at forward, defence and in goal.
Others include Valteri Filppula, Jaromir Jagr, Teemu Selanne, Saku Koivu, Pascal Dupuis, Brenden Morrow, Brad Boyes, Patrik Elias, Derek Roy, Daniel Alfredsson, Michael Ryder, Scott Hannan, Douglas Murray, Mike Smith and Ray Emery.
Let us know in the comment section below what teams should target which UFAs.
