As the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline nears in Major League Baseball, three right-handers are driving up the price of the pitching market.
Houston's Bud Norris, Kansas City's Ervin Santana and Jake Peavy of the Chicago White Sox are all performing at a level that would be welcomed by a team contending for the playoffs.
On Wednesday, Santana shut down a potent Baltimore offence, limiting the Orioles to three runs (one earned) over eight innings. Norris also pitched Wednesday, allowing three runs (all earned) in 6 1/3 innings pitched against Oakland, striking out seven.
Peavy returned from the disabled list on July 20 and lowered his season earned-run average to 4.19 with six effective innings versus Atlanta, which would appear in the market for a top starter after losing Tim Hudson for the balance of the season to an ankle injury on Wednesday.
Unlike the aforementioned hurlers, trade candidates like White Sox duo Alex Rios (poor June/July) and Alexei Ramirez (one home run through July 24) along with Canadian first baseman Justin Morneau (seven homers, 52 RBIs through July 24) of the Minnesota Twins aren't playing as though they want to be moved.
Could there be a shocking trade possibility out there, like the Toronto Blue Jays dealing right-fielder Jose Bautista (back to Pittsburgh) or Colorado peddling outfielder Michael Cuddyer, who was hitting .328 through July 24?
In 2011, Cleveland surprised many by acquiring starting pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez from Colorado for four minor leaguers. And in 2007, Texas shocked the baseball world by shipping first baseman Mark Teixeira to the Atlanta Braves for four minor leaguers: shortstop Elvis Andrus and pitchers Matt Harrison, Neftali Felix and Beau Jones.
