The Situation:
The Canadiens have been a feel good story in going from worst last year to near first in the East this season. Do they really need to add additional pieces, especially since forward Rene Bourque and defenceman Raphael Diaz will likely return from their concussions later this month? ... They picked up defenceman Davis Drewiske from the Los Angeles Kings for a fifth-round choice on Tuesday, a player that will help the team's blue-line depth ... They could use size up front. But this doesn't appear to be a franchise that is in the mix for a short-term fix, especially with all the young talent they currently have on the NHL roster.Playoff hopes:
Second in the East, three points up on the Boston Bruins, who have a game in hand on the Habs. Montreal could wind up playing another Canadian team in the playoffs, which hasn't happened since they beat the Nordiques in the first round in 1993.Schedule: 13 games remaining (six home, seven road)
At Home: Winnipeg, Boston, Washington, Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, Washington.
On the Road: Philadelphia, Buffalo, Toronto, Pittsburgh, New Jersey, Winnipeg, Toronto.

On the farm: In the past few weeks we've seen auditions from Jarred Tinordi and Nathan Beaulieu as well as forward Gabriel Dumont. Dumont leads the Bulldogs in goals scored with 16 in 54 games. Beaulieu was demoted with the addition of Drewiske on Tuesday.
Ottawa Senators
The Situation: The remarkable Senators have survived despite losing star players like Jason Spezza, Erik Karlsson, Milan Michalek and Craig Anderson to injury for extended periods this season ... Ottawa is in a similar situation to Montreal in the sense that Jared Cowen, who underwent hip surgery last fall, Michalek and Anderson will return later this month ... There is, however, uncertainty surrounding a possible return of Spezza before the playoffs ... The Senators main candidate to be moved will be goalie Ben Bishop.
Playoff hopes: Fifth in the East, four points behind fourth-place Bruins. The Senators begin an important seven-game road trip in Boston Tuesday night because of the 2013 world women's championship.
Schedule: 13 games remaining (five home, eight road)
At Home: Carolina, Washington, Toronto, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia.
On the Road: Boston, Buffalo, Florida, Tampa Bay, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Boston, Washington.
Restricted free agents: Mike Hoffman, Erik Condra, Patrick Wiercioch, Ben Bishop.
Unrestricted free agents: Daniel Alfredsson, Guillaume Latendresse, Peter Regin, Sergei Gonchar, Mike Lundin, Andre Benoit.

Cap space: $16.55-million US (prorated)
On the farm: Because of the injury epidemic in Ottawa, plenty of young talent got a look with the Senators this season. Forward Mike Hoffman is the latest to enjoy a stint in Ottawa. Twenty-year-old Shane Prince has enjoyed a fine rookie AHL season in Binghamton with 17 goals and 31 points in 57 games.
Toronto Maple Leafs
The Situation: The Maple Leafs emerged through some nervous times two weeks ago and have been much better (5-0-3) since the return of forward Joffrey Lupul from his broken forearm ... There is the possibility that Maple Leafs GM Dave Nonis will trade for Roberto Luongo from Vancouver or Miikka Kiprusoff from Calgary. But Nonis better be careful not to upset a team that has good chemistry right now.
Playoff hopes: Fifth in the East, tied with the Senators. But Ottawa has a game in hand entering Tuesday's action. The Maple Leafs are poised to end seven seasons of missing out on the playoffs.
Schedule: 12 games remaining (six home, six road)
At Home: Philadelphia, N.Y. Rangers, Montreal, New Jersey, N.Y. Islanders, Montreal.
On the Road: New Jersey, N.Y. Rangers, Washington, Ottawa, Tampa Bay, Florida.
Restricted free agents: Nazem Kadri, Leo Komarov, Frazer McLaren, Carl Gunnarsson, Cody Franson, Mark Fraser.
Unrestricted free agents: Clarke MacArthur, Tyler Bozak, Colton Orr, Ryan Hamilton, Mike Kostka.
No-trade clauses: Mikhail Grabovski (limited), John-Michael Liles (modified).
Cap space: $7.56-million US (prorated)
On the farm: AHL Toronto Marlies captain Ryan Hamilton has been with the Maple Leafs for the past two weeks and had played well. The Maple Leafs strength on the farm is with defencemen Korbinian Holzer and Jesse Blacker.
Winnipeg Jets
The Situation: Good thing the Jets play in the worst division in the NHL, the Southeast Division. Even though Winnipeg has dropped three in a row, neither the Carolina Hurricanes nor Washington Capitals have mounted much of a challenge ... The Jets have strong goaltending with Ondrej Pavelec, a decent defence, but beyond their top line of Bryan Little, Blake Wheeler and Andrew Ladd, and second-line right wing Evander Kane, there hasn't been any secondary offence ... The Jets rank 22ndin goals for and could use another top-six forward.
Playoff hopes: Third in the East because they are first in the Southeast, four points clear of Carolina and Washington. The Hurricanes, however, have played three fewer games and the Capitals have two games in hand on Winnipeg.
Schedule: 11 games remaining (seven home, four road)
At Home: Philadelphia, Buffalo, Florida, Tampa Bay, Carolina, N.Y. Islanders, Montreal.
On the Road: N.Y. Islanders, Montreal, Buffalo, Washington.
Restricted free agents: Blake Wheeler, Bryan Little, Alex Burmistrov, Patrice Cormier, Eric Tangradi, Anthony Peluso, Zach Bogosian, Zach Redmon, Paul Postma, Arturs Kulda.

On the farm: The Jets signed 2012 first-round choice, defenceman Jacob Trouba, on Tuesday. He decided to leave the University of Michigan to turn pro. He played well for the gold-medal winning United States world junior team...Maybe it's worth taking a look at 22-year-old centre Eric O'Dell. The second-year pro, who played his junior with the Sudbury Wolves, has 25 goals in 50 games, which is tied for ninth in the AHL.
