Ottawa's Jared Cowen made his presence felt in his season debut Tuesday, but he did it at the expense of Carolina's Jeff Skinner.

In his first game since undergoing hip surgery in November, the Senators defenceman took out Skinner with a massive open-ice hit in the first period. The Hurricanes centre held his head as he lay on the ice, but managed to get up and skate off on his own. He did not return to the game and no penalty was assessed on the play.

Following the hit, 5′10″ Hurricanes winger Chad LaRose went after the 6'5" Cowen. LaRose collected 17 penalty minutes, including two for instigating, five for fighting and a 10-minute misconduct.

Skinner has dealt with concussion issues this season, missing five games at the end of February.
