Senators, Wings, Habs top success-despite-injury index

This is hardly scientific, but we declare the Ottawa Senators tops in our success-despite-injury index that we've come up with, a computation that simply adds a team's rank in man-games lost to its place in the overall standings.

Not all man-games are created equal.

The Ottawa Senators are third in man-games lost to injury this season at 163, behind the Detroit Red Wings (190) and Florida Panthers (173) entering Wednesday's action in the lockout-shortened 2013 NHL season.

But in terms of quality over quantity, the injury bug has bitten the Senators the worst. Jason Spezza has missed 28 games. Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson has been out 19 games. Jared Cowen hasn't played a shift after undergoing hip surgery last fall. Milan Michalek has been in and out of action with 18 games missed, and now is on the mend after knee surgery.

Starting goalie Craig Anderson hasn't suited up for the past 15 games because of an ankle injury. Yet the Senators have survived with a solid 8-3-4 record without their top netminder.

Not a lot of other teams that have lost their No. 1 goalie for a spell this season (Carolina, Calgary, New Jersey, Toronto) have thrived the way the Senators have without Anderson. We'll see how the Pittsburgh Penguins make out if Marc-Andre Fleury is lost for an extended stretch with the neck ailment he suffered on Tuesday.

It's hard to say how much better the Senators would be with a healthy Spezza, Karlsson and company because they have piled up the points despite what has transpired. With both Spezza and Karlsson in the lineup at the beginning of the season, the Senators emerged out of the gate with an excellent 3-1-1 record.

The Senators' success can be attributed to coaching and depth. The same goes for the Red Wings in the West, who have missed the services long-term of Darren Helm, Todd Bertuzzi and Mikael Samuelsson, among others, this season.

Both the Red Wings and Senators have persevered and sit a remarkable fifth in their respective conferences.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Anaheim Ducks, Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins have been aided by relatively healthy years to date.

This is hardly scientific, but we declare the Senators tops in our success-despite-injury index that we've come up with, a computation that simply adds a team's rank in man-games lost to its place in the overall standings. The lower the number, the better, of course. The Senators are tops at nine, followed by Detroit (11) and Montreal (15).

Below, you will find each team's success-despite-injury index number, followed by its total number of man-games lost, and its NHL ranks in man-games lost and in the overall standings).
