Love for hockey is in the air in Peterborough

Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada is on Saturday but after spending two days in this year's host city of Peterborough, I can tell you that this feeling of excitement is as thick and real as the snow that blankets the city.

The love for hockey is in the air.

It's on the canal in Peterborough, Ont. as volunteers work tirelessly to shovel away snow so that children can play. It's in the schools where students can't wait to recite cheers and poems about their favourite hockey moment. It's in the tweets we see flowing in from across Canada showing smiling fans, young and old, sporting their team's bright colours.

Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada is on Saturday but after spending two days in this year's host city of Peterborough, I can tell you that this feeling of excitement is as thick and real as the snow that blankets the city.

This day will give us another excuse to celebrate what we already know - a shared love for hockey is at the heart of this annual CBC tradition.

The theme of "heart" is what this year's festivities are centred around. I've witnessed countless examples of this as our Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada team has travelled throughout Peterborough.

Earlier today we visited Rhema Christian School and although the roads were full of fresh snow, we arrived to a packed house of teachers and students. We brought members of our Hockey Night in Canada team, including Andi Petrillo, who led the conversation between students and former NHL stars like Wendel Clark.

Today's visit could have been called off if the school had decided to shut down for a snow day, but instead, parents and staff battled through poor weather conditions to make it happen.

"We wouldn't miss an event like this for the world," said Kate Lingard, the office administrator at Rhema Christian School.

She received numerous calls this morning from concerned parents (and children) who thought today's school visit may have been cancelled.

"I told them all it would go on," she said. "They could all come to school, but drive safely of course."

The attendance was close to one hundred per cent. Now that's heart.

What does the theme of "heart" in hockey mean to you? Let us know in the comments below and remember to join the conversation with us all weekend long.
