A controversial call left St. Louis Blues forward David Backes scratching his head on Friday night, after he was ejected for what was deemed to be a hit to the head on Detroit Red Wings defender Kent Huskins.

A controversial call left St. Louis Blues forward David Backes scratching his head on Friday night.
Backes delivered a crushing blow to Detroit Red Wings defenceman Kent Huskins as he was attempting to clear the puck out of his own zone midway through the third period of Detroit's 5-3 win Friday night, and was assessed a match penalty for the hit.

The referees deemed it illegal contact to the head, sending Backes to the dressing room while Huskins tried to catch his breath alongside the Detroit bench.

But upon closer inspection, Backes' shoulder never appeared to have made direct contact to Huskins's head, and instead, the principle point of contact looked to be his chest.

Blues coach Ken Hitchcock and fans alike were in an uproar over the perceived blown call.

What do you think? Was it the right call? Should the NHL institute instant replay for match penalties? Tell us in our comments section below.
