Every Monday, the CBCSports.ca team will pick one Canadian athlete that excelled on the international stage over the weekend. This week's winner is UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre.Eleven months after reconstructive knee surgery and over 17 months since his last fight, UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre returned to the octagon and shook off some "ring rust" in one of the most important fights of his career.
The 31-year-old had the hometown Montreal crowd solidly behind him, with the Bell Centre sporadically breaking out in "GSP, GSP!" and "ole, ole ole!" chants before and during his tilt with interim champion Carlos Condit (28-6).
In control for most of the fight, St-Pierre (23-2) was shaken by a kick to the head in the third round, but rallied to notch his 11th straight victory -- which may set up a super bout with 37-year-old Anderson Silva:
St-Pierre was also one of the main reasons why CBCSports.ca senior hockey writer Tim Wharnsby says he's now hooked on the UFC:
"I don't pretend to know GSP as well as those who filled the Bell Centre. But I know enough about him to like him from a distance. He seems humble and it's easy to see why he's one of Canada's most popular athletes... I promise you I will not tap-out on my enthusiasm for this spectacle. I definitely will be watching when St-Pierre clashes with Silva."
Honourable mentions:
- Megan Duhamel (Lively, Ont.) and Eric Radford (Balmertown, Ont.) took home pairs silver in Paris at the Trophee Eric Bompard Grand Prix event, thanks to a magnificent free skate that was the hot topic on the #CBCSkate podcast.
- Speed skaters Christine Nesbitt (London, Ont.), Ivanie Blondon (Ottawa, Ont.), and Brittany Schussler (Winnipeg, Man.) secured a bronze medal for Canada in the women's team pursuit in the Netherlands.
- Kevin Koe (Calgary, Alta.) and Rachel Homan (Orleans, Ont.) won their respective finals at the Rogers Curling Masters in Brantford, Ont.
